Introduction

It’s important to reflect on how you feel, and think about naming your emotions. It’s also really important to find adults that you can talk to about how you feel, and talk to them about what you might need. Your brother or sister’s needs might feel super important because of their disability, but this doesn’t make your needs any less.

If you are feeling particularly worried about what is going on for you, you’ll find links to some support services at the bottom of this page.

Talking to adults

Some Tips

Tip 1: Choose the right time and place

Find a quiet, comfortable place and a time when your adults are not busy or stressed. This will ensure they can give you their full attention and listen to your feelings.

Speak from your heart and share your true feelings. It’s okay to express any worries, fears, or concerns you may have. Your adults will appreciate your honesty.

Instead of saying, “You never spend time with me anymore,” say, “I feel like we don’t spend as much time together because of my brother or sister’s disability. I would really like more time together.” This way, you’re expressing your feelings without blaming them.

Show interest in understanding your brother or sister’s disability better. Ask your adults questions like, “Can you explain more about the disability and how it affects our family?” This will help you gain a better understanding and make you feel more included.

Let your adult know what you need from them. Whether it’s more one-on-one time, help with your own emotions, or just someone to talk to, expressing your needs can help your adults support you better.

Understand that your adults may also be going through a lot emotionally and logistically. Be patient with them as they navigate the challenges of raising a child with a disability. Remember that they love you and your brother or sister equally, even if it may not always seem that way.
